Yes, we do have to forgive our parents for they probably did the best they knew how. I was horrified recently to read someone who felt we should never forgive them. That's insane!

Humanity does usually evolve, learns from its mistakes. I say "usually" because I'm watching it stall as chaos seems to be the order of the day everywhere I turn.
