From Trash to Treasure, a Change of Perspective
Throwing anything away that can be useful to another is a grievous sin &, considering the state of the environment, should be a crime. Food banks function & provide a much-needed service thanks to the selfless souls who pour their empathic hearts into salvaging food that stores can no longer sell because of the products’ fading condition or because an official expiry date legally obligates them to dispose of the items.
Some stores, however, have such money-grubbing management that they insist that their expired items be thrown out without involving a food bank or other nonprofit agency which can make use of the less than perfectly fresh food. They don’t want to take a moment of their staff’s time to make the arrangements & to oversee the removal of the goods, so they trash them. What shits!
The food bank with which I have become familiar ends their days of providing long lists of recipients with the apportioned amount of food by turning over what is left to the local children’s or old folks homes. This is being super-efficient & respectful of everyone & everything — the stores & their staff & management which take the extra effort to make the food available, the child & eldercare facilities which get the remaining goods at day’s end, the…
