No Bones About It: You Can’t Argue with the Facts

A Tribute to Hitchcock

Near my home is a patch of woods on the hillside between the hospital & the water reservoir below. 50–100 crows’ nests fill the upper canopy of the tall evergreens with the racket from the nesting colony being audible on my apartment balcony a ½ km away. To some, it may even be frightening, especially if one is walking near those woods alone at dusk.

A rumor began to spread that the crows were so rowdy that they’d begun attacking passers-by. Soon, some were claiming that a couple of people had been injured or may have even died under siege from the massive crow colony. Supposedly, not only were the bones picked clean, but the bones themselves were reportedly pecked away to nothing.

The aggressive crow behavior began to attract adventurers who wanted to learn 1st-hand if things could have become as extreme as people were claiming in the vicinity of such raucous neighbors. Eventually, my curiosity got revved up as well, & off I went to verify for myself the seemingly overblown stories.

After walking back & forth through the woods a few times, I too came away convinced of the earlier accounts, for I did not find a single bone.

Happy Halloween!
